THE SICHERHEITS DIENST

Following Albert's repatriation from the Flemish Legion in early 1942, he was assigned to work for the Gestapo as an interpreter.

This would have inevitably involved him in some very unpleasant situations and he persuaded his superiors to re-assign him as a translator in the Sicherheitsdienst (Security Service),Section III C. His duties there were to translate relevant pieces from the Flemish daily press into German and to keep an eye on anti-German Flemish authors.

Unbenownst to his employers he used his job as a cover for assisting the Flemish Resistance and mitigating the effects of the occupation on the authors he was supposedly surveiling.

He never got any credit for this patriotic work as he was betrayed by the Belgian Security service and seriously wronged by his State Prosecutor.
